A Further Look at Virtual Desktop Infrastructure – IT Requirements

We have previously taken a look at the basic points of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), but in this piece, we would like to dig a little deeper and look at the IT requirements for VDI.

Client needs for infrastructure vary depending on whether you are taking a server-hosted or client-hosted approach.

VDI Server Requirements

It is possible to calculate your system central processing unit (CPU) and memory requirements by using your sizing guidelines or reference architecture.

Memory (RAM) requirements are relatively straightforward to calculate, again, using your sizing information. On average, the amount of RAM required for a virtual desktop is 1GB or 2GB of physical memory, although this can differ depending on a number of factors, including applications, operating system and workload.

Client-hosted virtualisation does not require VDI execution servers, as the virtual machines are generally executed on end-point machines.

VDI Network Requirements

The networking requirements, both between servers and clients running VDI images, along with internal server to server networks and storage networks are all considerations which also must be configured properly.

Networking requirements can vary a great deal – this depends upon the size of the server used to host the VDI sessions. For very large systems it is common to use multiple 1 Gbit/s Ethernet LAN connections, with additional multiple 8 Gbit/s FC SAN storage connections.

VDI Storage Requirements

The impact of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure on storage can be significant, and it can be tricky to understand the performance impact that a VDI deployment will have on storage systems. With this in mind, the key focus of deployment guidelines regarding storage is how to calculate storage capacity requirements.

There are storage technologies available which can have a positive impact on VDI performance, but client-hosted VDI can reduce storage requirements significantly, as storage is only used for offline backups.
